Interview with Award-Winning Artist and Writer Jock at New York Comic Con

DSTLRY Hosts Creator Appearances at New York Comic Con

As part of its New York Comic Con appearance, DSTLRY hosted multiple creator appearances including panels and signings. On Friday, The Beat caught up with award-winning artist and writer Jock to talk about the collaborative effort behind DSTLRY, his artistic inspirations, and more.

Jock shared his excitement about NYCC, stating, “It’s been great! Super busy, it’s Friday feel like I’m five days in already.”

When asked about his artistic inspirations, Jock mentioned artists like Jorge Zaffino, Mike Millones, Dave McKean, and Frank Miller, whose artwork he displays in his home. Reflecting on his journey into the comics medium, Jock credited the anthology comic 2000 AD for sparking his interest in drawing comic books.

Discussing his transition into both writing and drawing comics, Jock expressed his love for the medium, stating, “Comics, I feel, are a pure medium. Collaboration can be a wonderful thing, obviously, but there is a certain purity in one person doing the whole thing.”

When asked about his approach to cover art versus traditional comics interiors, Jock explained that covers are generally drawn first due to industry requirements, but he enjoys working on both aspects of comic creation. He also hinted at upcoming collaborations and plans for collectibles and other mediums with DSTLRY.

Reflecting on his collaborations with fellow creators like Scott Snyder, Jock emphasized the unique dynamics of each partnership, stating, “Every collaboration is different… when you do pair with someone the sum is greater than its parts.”

As fans eagerly await upcoming collaborations at DSTLRY, Jock teased, “We’ve been talking about it but I’m not going to say anything just yet.”
