Exploring the Wicked World of Corporate America Through Indie Comics: The Story of Boink Comix’s “Cereal”

Philly-Based Creators Launch Comic Series Exposing Corporate America’s Dark Side

Philadelphia-based creators Don Steinberg and Rich Harrington are shaking up the comic book world with their new series, Cereal, under their independent label Boink Comix. While most mainstream comics focus on superpowered heroes and villains, Steinberg and Harrington are shining a light on the dark side of corporate America.

The six-part series, launched in January 2023, follows the story of Tracey Colorado, a rebellious cereal inventor who uncovers the hidden evils of a power-hungry cereal company. With a cast of cereal box mascots and vengeful micromanagers, Cereal delves into the world of business meetings and corporate corruption.

Inspired by their love for Mad magazine and Cap’n Crunch cereal, Steinberg and Harrington bring a mix of humor and social commentary to their work. The duo is also looking to breathe new life into Philly’s indie comic community with the upcoming Moore Comics Expo on April 13, organized by Harrington, an illustration professor at Moore College of Art & Design.

Despite the challenges of being an independent publisher in a digital age, Harrington and Steinberg are determined to bring their unique vision to a wider audience. With plans for a graphic novel and hopes of turning Cereal into a TV series, the duo is pushing boundaries and exploring new possibilities in the world of comics.

As they continue to gain traction at comic book expos and local shops, Harrington and Steinberg are proving that there is still a place for print comics in a digital world. With their blend of humor, social commentary, and creativity, they are carving out a niche for themselves in the ever-evolving landscape of comic book storytelling.
