California Comic Book Store Hosts Last Free Comic Book Day Event

Final Free Comic Book Day Event Held at Flying Colors Comics in Concord, California

CONCORD, Calif. (NBC, KYMA/KECY) – Flying Colors Comics in Concord, California, known for starting the worldwide phenomenon of Free Comic Book Day more than 20 years ago, held its final event at its longtime location on Saturday. Despite the bittersweet farewell, owner Joe Field assures fans that this is not the end of their story.

Since its opening in 1988, Flying Colors Comics has been a hub for comic book enthusiasts, bringing literature and art together in a unique way. Free Comic Book Day, an event founded by Field in 2001, has grown to be celebrated in 60 countries, offering free comics to all who visit the store.

As the store’s lease at Oak Grove Plaza comes to an end in January, Field announced plans to relocate within the City of Concord, keeping the spirit of Flying Colors Comics alive. Fans and customers, both new and old, gathered at the store on Saturday to celebrate the final Free Comic Book Day at the original location.

Customers praised the store for its welcoming environment and sense of community, expressing hope that these qualities will continue in the store’s next chapter. Despite the challenges of relocating, Field remains optimistic about the future of Flying Colors Comics and its impact on the local community.

As the final chapter at the East Bay area store comes to a close, fans eagerly await the next adventure for Flying Colors Comics and the continuation of its legacy in the world of comic books.
