Stormtroopers from the 501st Legion Guard the Door of Atlantis Fantasyworld in Downtown Santa Cruz for May the Fourth and Free Comic Book Day

Hundreds of comic book fans braved the rain and wind in downtown Santa Cruz on Saturday to celebrate Free Comic Book Day and May the Fourth at Atlantis Fantasyworld. Despite the less-than-ideal weather, the event was a huge success, with fans of all ages flocking to the shop to pick up free comics and immerse themselves in the world of superheroes and sci-fi.

Owner Joe Ferrara was pleasantly surprised by the turnout, noting that even the rain couldn’t dampen the spirits of comic book enthusiasts. The store was packed with patrons eager to grab one of the many free titles available, with popular picks including “Star Wars,” “X-Men,” “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles,” and “Pokémon.”

For Ferrara, Free Comic Book Day is not just about giving away free comics, but also about introducing newcomers to the world of comics and encouraging a love of reading. He emphasized the importance of comics in getting kids interested in reading and bridging the gap between screens and books.

The event also featured appearances by members of the 501st Legion, who dressed up as stormtroopers, “Tie Fighter” pilots, and a lone “Jawa” to greet patrons and pose for pictures. The festive atmosphere and sense of community at Atlantis Fantasyworld made it a day to remember for all who attended.

Despite the constant flow of people in and out of the store, Ferrara and his staff were thrilled to see the excitement and enthusiasm of the fans. Free Comic Book Day may only come once a year, but for the fans and staff at Atlantis Fantasyworld, the magic of comics and storytelling lives on every day.
