Local artists and writers shine at Kingston Independent Comic Expo, drawing a crowd – Daily Freeman

“Kingston Independent Comic Expo Showcases Local Artists and Writers”

The Kingston Independent Comic Expo drew a large crowd of Hudson Valley artists and writers on Saturday, April 27, 2024, at the Old Dutch Church on Wall Street. With 40 exhibitions featuring illustrators, graphic designers, and writers from the region, attendees had the opportunity to network and showcase their work.

One of the local artists at the expo was cartoonist Mady G, a Kingston native who had a variety of paintings, stickers, and comics for sale. Mady G, who has been in the publishing industry for over a decade, is known for her versatility in different mediums and had previously exhibited at the Hudson Valley LGBTQ+ Center.

Another highlight of the expo was the comic book “Kastor” by Uni Bowen and Monique Dixon, which is partially set in Kingston. The duo, who have been creating art together since they were 10 years old in the Bronx, developed the story during the COVID-19 pandemic. “Kastor” follows the journey of two women without magical powers who decide to fight demons together, with the story starting in Kingston and moving down to the Bronx.

At their table, Bowen and Dixon showcased iconic items from the book, such as candles, protection salts, and lotions, adding an immersive element to their storytelling. The expo was a great opportunity for attendees to support local artists and writers while exploring the vibrant world of independent comics.
