Looking Back at the Promotion of ‘Dasig’ at Conventions – The Nerds of Color: A Retrospective

Navigating the Convention Circuit: A Look at Exhibiting Dasig at WonderCon

The Rise of Filipino American Comics Creators at Conventions: A Story of Struggle and Strength

In a world filled with elaborate cosplayers, autograph opportunities, and panels, one group of creators is making a name for themselves in the convention circuit. Lauren Lola and Kristian Kabuay, the minds behind the graphic novel Dasig, have been taking the convention scene by storm, showcasing their work to a mainstream audience.

Dasig, a graphic novel set in pre-colonial Philippines, follows the journey of a warrior-in-training as she navigates a world threatened by invaders. Since its release during Filipino American History Month, Lauren and Kristian have been exhibiting their work at various events, including WonderCon, LA Comic Con, and FanExpo San Francisco.

While the road to success hasn’t been easy, Lauren and Kristian have faced both struggles and triumphs in bringing Dasig to a wider audience. From adapting their booth setups to explaining the significance of their work to unfamiliar audiences, they have learned to navigate the challenges of showcasing Filipino American stories in a predominantly mainstream space.

However, they are not alone in their mission. The presence of other Filipino American comics creators at conventions has created a sense of unity and solidarity among creators working towards the same goal. Together with creators like Kid Heroes Comics, Diwata Komiks, and Kwento Comics, Lauren and Kristian are paving the way for more diverse and inclusive storytelling in the world of comics.

As they continue to promote Dasig and share their work with audiences from all walks of life, Lauren and Kristian are hopeful that they are leaving a lasting impression on those they meet. With plans for future conventions and the possibility of a Filipino-centric event on the horizon, the future looks bright for these trailblazing creators.
