Grand Rapids Comic-Con’s Annual Spring Fling Draws Crowds and Celebrities

Chatter filled the air on April 12-14 as crowds of attendees flooded the floors of the Kalamazoo Expo Center for Grand Rapids Comic-Con’s annual spring fling. The convention, which first opened its doors in 2013, has grown over the years to become a beloved event for fans of all things pop culture.

According to the Comic-Con website, the event creates a kind and respectful community that welcomes cosplayers, artists, and V.I.P guests, including YouTubers, media personalities, celebrity voice actors, comic book artists, and many more. This year’s lineup of V.I.P guests included Tony Moran, known for playing the first Michael Myers in “Halloween,” Greg Cipes, the voice of Beast Boy in “Teen Titans,” and Hyden Walch, the voice of Starfire in “Teen Titans.”

Even with their V.I.P status, these guests fully embraced the Comic-Con experience, mingling with attendees and sharing their love for all things geeky. Tony Moran expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to connect with fans, while Greg Cipes shared his plans for the future of his career in voice acting.

The heart of Comic-Con lies in its attendees, who come to cosplay, buy and sell merchandise, and forge new connections. Cosplayers like Tabitha Ryerson and Max Haggart shared their personal stories of how cosplay has impacted their lives, from self-expression to breaking barriers for people with disabilities.

Merchandise is also a big draw at Comic-Con, with artists like Terry Huddleston showcasing their unique styles and creations. Huddleston described his art as a blend of pop culture influences and comic book styles, creating detailed and vibrant pieces that appeal to fans of all ages.

Overall, Grand Rapids Comic-Con’s annual spring fling was a resounding success, bringing together fans from all walks of life to celebrate their shared love of geek culture. The next Grand Rapids Comic-Con is already on the horizon, set to take place on Nov. 15-17, 2024.
