Don’t Look Into The Abyss is a limited edition book accompanied by a ten-sided die, allowing readers to make choices that impact the storyline. Ziegler explained that she wanted to create a game within the game, challenging readers to navigate through the narrative while exploring themes of restrictive social norms and queerness.
The book, printed using spot color printing in a navy, pink, and turquoise color palette, follows the adventure of a character exploring The Expanse on a small ship while trying to avoid The Abyss. Ziegler’s deliberate use of color and design elements, such as hidden passages and moiré patterns, adds depth and meaning to the storytelling.
During the interview, Ziegler also discussed the intersection of artist books and comic books in Philadelphia, highlighting the growing popularity of independent, artist-made comic books in the city. She emphasized the importance of creating accessible and interactive art objects that can be shared with the community.
Looking towards the future, Ziegler shared her plans to start a subscription press, offering subscribers the opportunity to receive new artist books throughout the year.
